One to two weeks before: make the plan
- List what is moving. Count boxes and list the big furniture. Measure anything awkward, including the doors and stairs it has to pass through.
- Pick the right help. A smaller load may suit a Transit. Larger moves may need a Luton, more time or several trips. Choose two movers for heavy items and when you can’t help with lifting.
- Check both ends. Ask about lifts, booking slots, vehicle height limits and the nearest legal loading point.
- Arrange parking. Check the council or building rules. If a suspension or permit is needed, allow time to arrange it.
- Agree the date. Make sure keys and access will be available. Send your request early, and wait for confirmation before treating a slot as secured.
A few days before: pack for people, not superheroes
Use boxes you can lift safely. Books go in smaller boxes; bedding can go in larger ones. Tape the bottom properly, fill gaps so contents do not shift and label the room on the side as well as the top.
- Wrap fragile items individually and mark them clearly.
- Bag and label screws and fittings for each piece of furniture.
- Empty and secure drawers or removable parts as appropriate.
- Arrange safe disconnection of appliances before collection.
- Keep valuables, ID, documents and medication with you.
- Send us an update if your inventory or access has changed.
The night before: find the kettle
Pack an essentials bag with keys, phone charger, toiletries, a change of clothes, snacks and anything needed immediately at the new place. Keep it separate from the main load. Put cleaning supplies where you can reach them after the furniture goes.
Confirm who will meet the van at each end. Charge your phone and share any access instructions. If you’re buying furniture from someone else, check that the seller is still available at the agreed time.
Moving morning: clear the runway
- Keep hallways, stairways and entrances clear.
- Show the crew fragile items and explain anything unusual.
- Point out the agreed loading space and lift arrangements.
- Keep children and pets safely away from the loading route.
- Check cupboards, loft access areas and storage spaces before leaving.
- Keep keys with you, not in a box inside the van. Yes, it happens.
At the other end: finish properly
Tell the crew which rooms the boxes belong in. Check the load together before the van leaves, raise any concerns promptly and settle the agreed payment with the driver. Keep your booking reference until everything is complete.
